I was born and raised in the Seattle area with a long-lasting love of marine life. My plan had always been to study Marine Biology from as far back as elementary school. Every science fair, every project had some relation to marine life. Reading and writing was something I had to do, not something I wanted to do. Until my sophomore year of High School.
My English teacher, Mr. Mancoff, ignited something within me. An outlet, a means of expression I didn't know I was capable of. Writing got me through the toughest times of my life. Without it, I'm not sure where I would be. Mr. Mancoff gave me the confidence, and encouragement to keep going, to keep writing and to keep sharing my stories. I am a storyteller, a creator in many mediums. I invite you into my creations and to join me on this journey.
It took years to find a process that works for me and is something that continues to evolve. All of my projects begin with an outline, usually a brief rundown of a plot or even just a simple concept. From there, depending on the project, I'll focus on a character, usually taking inspiration from a person in my life or an aspect of myself. As I learn more about this character, the plot begins to fabricate itself. A character's flaws drive the plot forward as they try to reconcile something within them, making the big events of my stories more meaningful. However, this doesn't mean they fix everything and all is happy-go-lucky. The characters that fascinate me most are the ones who can never seem to change, no matter how hard they try.
After characters, the details of the plot follow. A murder to solve, a government coup, or meeting a work deadline, every plot is just as engaging to me! My favorite stories to create are the relatable ones. And no matter the character, all of us can relate to the Human Experience (even if the character isn't human). I love to invite an audience to consider what it means to be human, what it means to feel, and how our interactions shape our identities and worldview. While it's easier to write an action-packed plot with twists and turns, if it doesn't question, it isn't for me. From my perspective, anyone can blow up a bridge in a story, but unless people care about it, no one will care to watch.
Currently, I've been experimenting with miniatures for the Singularity Sedition trilogy. I'm finding this helpful in visualizing a world that exists only in my head.
